CARLINVILLE, IL -- The Blackburn College Baseball team opened their 2025 home schedule by hosting Mississippi University for Women in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and split the series, winning the second game 8-2 after dropping the first game.
Blackburn started the second game of the doubleheader strong by scoring five runs in the first inning. Senior Andrew Lozano started the inning with a double before junior Harley Carney singled. Junior Omar Claudio followed with a single to score Lozano then senior RJ Arredondo hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to make it 4-0. Later in the inning, juinor Pedro Medina walked after junior Brett Lander reached on a fielder's choice. Junior Royce Congi singled to load the bases then Lozano hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Lander to score and give BC a 5-0 advantage after the first inning.
The Owls narrowed the gap with two runs in the fourth inning but the Beavers answered in the bottom of the inning. Lozano got on through an error and Carney used a bunt to get on and moved Lozano to third. Carney stole second and Claudio walked to load the bases. Brunaugh came up next and singled which scored both Carney and Claudio to move the Beavers ahead 7-2.
In the eighth inning, Arredondo got on through an error then the Owls intentionally walked Brunaugh. A balk helped the pair advance and sophomore Dominic Medrano took advantage with a single to score Arredondo which gave the Beavers an 8-2 lead. After a scoreless top of the ninth, the Beavers captured the victory.
In the game, senior Mason Wyant picked up his second victory of the season after throwing for seven innings, posting four strikeouts.
The first game saw MUW strike first and hold on to take a 22-4 win.
BC returns to action Thursday with a single game at Monmouth College. The team resumes SLIAC action Saturday with a doubleheader at Fontbonne University.
