Beavers Takes One at Principia
ELSAH, IL -- The Blackburn College Baseball team traveled to Principia College for a doubleheader on Tuesday evening, and captured a 4-2 win in the night cap.
ELSAH, IL -- The Blackburn College Baseball team traveled to Principia College for a doubleheader on Tuesday evening and captured a 4-2 win in the night cap after falling 8-4 in the first game.
Principia took the lead early in game one after scoring one run at the bottom of the first inning. At the top of the third inning, senior Andrew Lozano reached first on a Panther error and advanced to second. He reached third after junior Royce Congi grounded out to third base and then freshman Andrew Medina singled to shortstop to score Lozano. Medina advanced to second after sophomore Dominic Medrano was hit by a pitch. A batted ball by senior RJ Arredondo advanced Medrano to second and Medina to third. Then, sophomore Luke Ellinger doubled to left field, which scored both Medrano and Medina to put the Beavers up 3-1.
The Panthers scored two more runs at the bottom of the third inning to tie up the game 3-3. In the top of the fourth inning, Medina singled to left field and advanced to third after Medrano reached first and advanced to second on a Principia error. Arredondo singled to center field to score Medina and put the Beavers up again, 4-3.
However, the Panthers answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and one more run at the bottom of the sixth inning. The Beavers were scoreless at the top of the seventh inning, which resulted in the game ending with a win for Principia, 8-4.
In game two, the Panthers took the lead by scoring one run in both the bottom of the first inning and the bottom of the second inning. The Beavers answered back in the top of the third inning when Congi reached first on an error by Principia, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored after Lozano singled to center field.
At the top of the fourth, senior CJ Brunaugh reached first on a walk, and advanced to second when Medina walked. Medrano singled to center field to advance Medina to second and Brunaugh to third. Arredondo singled to right field which advanced all runners and scored Brunaugh. Junior Pedro Medina flew out to left field to score A. Medina and put the Beavers up 3-2. At the top of the sixth inning, Medrano walked and then advanced to second after Arredondo reached first on a Panther error. Medrano advanced to third on a balk and then advanced home when Congi singled to third base. The seventh inning was scoreless for both teams and the Beavers brought home the win with a final score of 4-2.
Sophomore Colton Bultema picked up his first career win for the Beavers and threw four strikeouts in game two.
The Beavers return to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at home Saturday afternoon with another doubleheader against Eureka College.
