EUREKA, IL – Blackburn College Baseball took on St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Eureka College in a three-game series but was unable to capture victory as they dropped the series 9-0, 13-3 and 4-1.
Senior Harley Carney led the team with three hits, a home run, a run batted in and scored a run.
Freshman Santos Mercado also had a home run and had a team-best two runs.
Freshman Rudy Hinijosa led the pitchers with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Senior Kelton Keran threw five strikeouts.
The Beavers took an early lead in Friday's second game as Carney opened the game with a home run. The team added two runs in the second inning when freshman Sei Valdez singled and allowed Mercado and freshman Jeremy Mazariegos to score. Both had gotten on base with singles.
Unfortunately, the Red Devils answered and were able to pull away with a 13-3 victory.
The team's came back for a third game on Saturday and saw Eureka take an early 4-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Mercado batted first and hit his first career home run to make it 4-1. However, BC was unable to add another run to drop the contest.
Blackburn will return to action Tuesday and Wednesday when they take on Lyon College in another SLIAC three-game series. The games will be played at Lloyd Hopkins Field at Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois.
