JACKSONVILLE, IL — The Blackburn men's basketball team battled wire-to-wire but ultimately fell to Illinois College in a tightly contested matchup that featured 13 ties and multiple lead changes, 81–74.
The top scorers for the Beavers were junior Payton Cook and freshman Jaylen Jeter, who each finished with 18 points. Junior Kamerin Carter and freshman Evan Jordan followed with eight points apiece, while senior Darius Duff led the team on the boards with five rebounds.
Blackburn got off to a solid start when junior Kcion Welch knocked down a three-pointer less than two minutes into the game, giving the Beavers an early spark. Jordan followed with an offensive rebound and bucket to push the lead to 5–0. Illinois College answered back, however, and the game quickly settled into a physical, back-and-forth rhythm.
Blackburn leaned on hustle and second-chance opportunities throughout the first half. Jeter provided an immediate boost off the bench, scoring inside and later burying a three-pointer to reclaim the lead at 10–9. Welch added another three midway through the half, and Cook chipped in with timely scoring to keep the Beavers within striking distance.
Despite Illinois College closing the half strong, Blackburn stayed composed. A late three from Cook tied the game at 38–38, and although the visitors scored just before the buzzer, Blackburn went into halftime trailing only 42–40.
The second half opened with Illinois College briefly extending the margin, but Blackburn responded with toughness on both ends. Jordan scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit, while defensive stops from Welch and Duff kept the game within one possession. Junior Camden Nelson drained a key three to make it 55–54, continuing the momentum swing.
Midway through the half, Blackburn surged ahead. A steal and score by Jeter, followed by a three from Cook, gave the Beavers a 60–57 lead. Blackburn's ball movement and rebounding remained strong, highlighted by assists from Duff and Carter.
In the closing minutes, Blackburn briefly regained the lead at 72–70 after a pull-up jumper by Carter, but Illinois College responded with timely shooting and offensive rebounds. A late Illinois College three-pointer with under two minutes remaining proved decisive.
Blackburn continued to fight to the final horn, with Carter scoring in the closing seconds, but Illinois College sealed the game at the free-throw line, 81–74.
The Blackburn Beavers return to conference play on January 3 in Eureka, IL, where they will face the Eureka Red Devils.
