BATESVILLE, AR — The Blackburn men's basketball team earned a hard-fought, back-and-forth 74–72 victory over Lyon, extending its winning streak to three games.
Blackburn showcased a well-balanced scoring effort, with five players reaching double figures. Juniors Kcion Welch led the way with 15 points, followed by Kamerin Carter with 14. Freshmen Evan Jordan and Jaylen Jeter each contributed 13 points, while junior Payton Cook added 11.
The Beavers jumped out early behind an aggressive start from Carter, who knocked down multiple jumpers and a three-pointer as Blackburn built an early lead. Jeter and Jordan added to the momentum with transition finishes, while Blackburn's defense forced turnovers and converted them into points, helping the Beavers open up a double-digit advantage midway through the first half.
Blackburn continued to attack the paint and capitalize on second-chance opportunities. Welch provided a spark off the bench with a three-pointer and a powerful dunk, while seniors Darius Duff and Cayden Paquette added perimeter scoring as the Beavers maintained control for much of the opening half. Despite a late Lyon push, Blackburn carried a narrow 32–31 lead into halftime after converting free throws in the final seconds.
The second half saw multiple lead changes as both teams traded baskets. Welch continued his strong play inside, and Cook delivered key finishes around the rim, including a momentum-shifting dunk midway through the half. Carter knocked down another three to steady Blackburn during a critical stretch, while Jordan added timely scoring in transition.
Down the stretch, Blackburn's defense stepped up, forcing key turnovers that led to fast-break layups by Jeter, who scored several crucial points in the final minutes. With Lyon closing the gap late, Blackburn remained composed at the free-throw line, converting key attempts to protect the lead.
Lyon hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to cut the deficit, but Blackburn held on to secure the 74–72 win, sealing the victory with late free throws and defensive rebounds.
The Beavers return to the Beaver Dome on Thursday to face the Golden Eagles of Spalding University.
