PELLA, IA -- The Blackburn College Men's Soccer team kicked off their 2025 season by visiting Central College Saturday afternoon and scored two second half goals but it would not be enough as they fell 3-2.
Central managed to take a 1-0 lead into halftime but Blackburn tied it up 50th minute when sophomore Gavin Norwood scored his first career goal. Sophomore Fredy Paiz put a corner kick into the box and the Beavers managed two shots but the Central goalkeeper managed two saves before Norwood put the deflected second save back into the net.
However, the hosts answered with two goals to take a 3-1 lead. The Beavers narrowed the gap when freshman Axel Gutierrez scored in the 75th minute. Norwood took a free kick and hit freshman Abner Portillo streaking up the sideline who then centered the ball into the middle of the box. Gutierrez managed to get above the Central defense and heading the ball right past the goalkeeper for his first career goal.
Unfortunately, BC was unable to get another goal to fall 3-2.
Blackburn will stay in Iowa and returns to action Sunday to visit Buena Vista University.
