GREENVILLE, IL -- Blackburn College Softball took on Greenville College in a matchup of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals that saw the Beavers score the first four runs of the day but were unable to hold on as they fell 10-7 and 9-5.
Junior Kenadee Frey led the way with four hits and six runs batted. She also scored two runs and belted her fifth homer of the season.
Senior Kailynn Kruep scored a team-high three runs and currently leads the league with 30 runs this season. Freshman Addison Ruyle notched two hits, a double and a home run, plus she finished with four rbi's.
Freshman Jocelyn Hossler finished with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
The Beavers opened the day with four runs in the first inning of the opener. Freshman Alexis Weber was hit by a pitch then advanced to third off two wild pitches, and scored on a passed ball. Kruep and senior Zoe Mitchell both walked before Ruyle hit her third homer of the season to give the team a 4-0 lead to start the game. Unfortunately, the Panthers answered with seven runs in the bottom of the inning, and added three more in the fourth.
In the fifth, Blackburn responded. Freshman Kendal Maddox and Weber walked before Kruep knocked in Maddox with a double. Frey would knock in Kruep and Weber with a single to pull within 10-7 but were unable to get another run.
The nightcap saw a scoreless two innings before Greenville scored two runs in the bottom of the third. BC scored in the third inning when Ruyle knocked in Frey with a double. Greenville answered in the fourth before Blackburn scored another run in the fifth. Kruep got on with a single then advanced to second on a wild pitch, and got to third off a fielder's choice hit by Mitchell. She scored off a Frey single to make it a 3-2 deficit. However, the hosts added another run in the bottom of the inning then scored five in the bottom of the sixth.
BC made a comeback in their seventh. Senior Caroline Gibson and Mitchell singled before Frey knocked her home run to make it 9-5. Unfortunately the comeback effort ended and the Beavers fell.
Blackburn will now head to Maranatha Baptist University Saturday for a nonconference matchup.
