Women's Basketball Hosts Dominican in Home Opener
CARLINVILLE, IL—The Blackburn College Women's Basketball team had their home opener Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup facing off against Dominican College. The Beavers would play a hard fought game against the Stars but were unable to secure the victory as they fell short to the Stars 81-60.
Junior Eizaenirys Allende Quinones led the Beavers in points and steals having 22 points and eight steals. Senior Amya Harris added 13 points and added seven rebounds. Junior Cheresse Mitchell was credited with eight points and led the team in rebounds with nine. Senior Gabriela Solis led the Beavers in assists with four and also chipped in seven points.
The Beavers started the game with a Quinones steal and layup then Mitchell made a layup after a Star basket, and freshman Victoria McGee answered two free throws with a three pointer to take an early 7-4 lead. Quinones made two free throws after another Dominican basket, and Mitchell added another layup after the guests scored to give BC an 11-8 lead four minutes into the game. However, Dominican would responded to close out the quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 23-13 lead after the first quarter.
After the quarter break, Quinones made two baskets and senior Amya Harris answered a DU score before Quinones added two more free throws to narrow the deficit to 25-21. After Dominican scored again, Solis and Quinones both scored to make it 27-25 with 6:39 left in the half. Harris added a three later in the quarter but once again the Stars closed out the quarter on a run and took a 35-28 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Domincan pushed their lead out to double figures and Blackburn was unable to responded as the guests eventually took the 81-60 lead.
The Beavers will look to regroup and bounce back in their next non-conference matchup when they host Monmouth College Wednesday night.
