CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN — Blackburn Wrestling tested itself against elite competition on Saturday at the Wabash College Open, squaring off against a field loaded with Division I programs and top Division II teams. The Beavers consistently faced opponents from the Big Ten Conference and responded with their strongest collective performance of the season.
Every Blackburn wrestler rose to the level of competition, wrestling with confidence and intensity against some of the nation's best. At 149 pounds, freshman Gaven Vollintine delivered the highlight performance of the day, finishing 2–2 and earning a dominant 19–2 technical fall victory over a Division I opponent from Indiana University. His performance set the tone for the Beavers and demonstrated Blackburn's ability to compete with elite programs.
At 184 pounds, junior Keaton Wilhelm also went 2–2, picking up solid wins against tough opposition and continuing his steady progress this season. Heavyweight sophomore Remington Hiser matched that mark, posting a 2–2 record while battling through a physically demanding bracket.
Several other Beavers put together strong individual efforts but were ultimately challenged by the depth and experience of Big Ten opponents. Despite the tough matchups, the team showed clear growth, composure, and resilience throughout the tournament.
Head Coach praised his team's approach and mindset following the event.
"I was impressed with the way we competed at the Wabash Open. We were not intimidated by going against wrestlers from the Big Ten Conference. We wrestled with passion and a freedom that brought out the best in us," said the head coach. "Gaven Vollintine's dominant win over a strong Division I wrestler from Indiana University really proved to our guys that we can wrestle with the best. We are improving and seeing how good we can be."
The Wabash Open served as an important measuring stick for Blackburn, as the Beavers continue to build confidence and momentum against top-tier competition heading into the remainder of the season.
The beavers have one more regular season competition at the Milikin Dual this coming Friday.
