WEBSTER GROVES, MO -- Blackburn College Volleyball opened St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Play with a tri-match where they defeated Webster University after they took on Mississippi University for Women.
The Beavers defeated the hosts 3-2, winning the second, fourth and fifth sets.
Freshman Rylea Black paced the team with 22 kills in two matches while hitting at .250. She added two solo blocks and two block assists. Sophomore Rean Ward notched 15 kills while seniors Zoe Mitchell and Ella Person tallied 14. Senior Payton Moeglin chipped in with 13.
Junior Kenadee Frey posted 57 assists and tied for the team lead with four aces. Mitchell and freshman Elexus Frey also had four aces.
K. Frey also led the defense with a total of 32 digs. E. Frey and Moeglin both finished with 29 digs
In the team's first match, BC won the first set 25-23 but dropped the next three sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-23. Blackburn dropped the first set against Webster 25-12 but answered to take the second set 25-23. After falling 25-13, BC rallied to win the fourth set 25-29 and took the fifth 15-13.
The team is now 1-1 in conference play and will take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Wednesday in nonconference action. The Beavers will host Westminster College Saturday on Homecoming.
