Softball Hosts Spalding In SLIAC Opener
CARLINVILLE, IL -- The Blackburn College Softball team hosted St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Spalding University, but fell to the Golden Eagles 5-2 and 9-0 in a conference doubleheader.

CARLINVILLE, IL -- The Blackburn College Softball team hosted St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Spalding University, but fell to the Golden Eagles 5-2 and 9-0 in a conference doubleheader.
Sophomore Kenadee Frey led the Beavers offense with three hits and scored one run. Junior Zoe Mitchell and freshman Mailee Schoen each added two hits. Schoen and sophomore Sierra Hiser had one run batted in each. Senior Shelby Koenig and junior Caroline Gibson had one hit each. Senior Miley Kwiatkowski scored one run for the Beavers.
Koenig threw three strikeouts in game one. Junior Michelle Hollon also threw three strikeouts in game two.
During the opener, the Beavers were down 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Frey singled off of a bunt, then Mitchell singled to left field to advance Frey to second base. Schoen then singled to right field, and Frey made it to home plate to put the Beavers on the board. At the bottom of the fifth inning, Gibson doubled to center field, and Kwiatkowski came in to pinch run for her. Koenig then grounded out off of a sacrifice bunt to advance Kwiatkowski to third and Hiser grounded out to second base to score Kwiatkowski and add another run for the Beavers. The rest of the game remained scoreless, and the Golden Eagles took a 5-2 victory.
The Golden Eagles offense remained strong and left the Beavers scoreless in game two with the final score being 9-0.
The Beavers return to action on Wednesday as they travel out to take on Webster University in another SLIAC matchup.
