Softball Advances to SLIAC Semifinals With 1-0 Win over Fontbonne
ST. ANN, MO -- Blackburn College Softball advanced to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Semifinals by defeating Fontbonne University 1-0 in extra innings.
ST. ANN, MO -- Blackburn College Softball advanced to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Semifinals by defeating Fontbonne University 1-0 in extra innings.
After a scoreless seven innings, the teams were forced into extra innings. The teams continued to stay scoreless after the eighth. In the top of the ninth, junior Brianna Melchor opened the inning placed on second base. Senior Grace Mackey singled to advance Melchor to third. Sophomore Sierra Hiser followed with a fly ball to centerfield which allowed Melchor to cross the plate, putting the Beavers ahead 1-0. The defense came out in the bottom of the ninth and got the Griffins out in three straight batters for the victory.
The pitchers dual saw senior Shelby Koenig throw five strikeouts and allowed just three hits.
Mackey led the offense with two hits. Senior Julianna Tabian, juniors Zoe Mitchell and Caroline Gibson, and sophomore Kenadee Frey also had hits.
Blackburn will now advance to semifinals hosted by Spalding University in Louisville, KY. The double-elimination format begins with the Beavers playing Thursday at 4 p.m. against Spalding. The winner will advance to play at 2:30 pm Friday while the loser will play again at 12 pm Friday.
