With students returning to Blackburn's campus and classes starting this week, the Blackburn Women's Basketball team took on the first place team in the conference, the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan University. The Beavers found themselves on the losing end of this game by a final score of 76-50.
The Beavers started the game off hot and kept that momentum till the end of the first quarter where they found themselves tied with the best team in the conference at 13 all. Going into the second quarter the Beavers seemed to match the Tigers bucket for bucket until Darby Massner of the Tigers got hot and hit a couple of three pointers to end the half, making the score 31-25. Coming out of halftime Massner picked up right where she left off hitting several more three pointers. That was all the Tigers needed to juice up a run that would last the entire quarter, a 34-9 run. The Tigers used the big third quarter to power past the Beavers and finish the game strong, winning 76-50.
Leading the way for the Beavers, was sophomore guard Candace Pollock, who shot 5-8 from the field, 3 of the those 5 buckets being 3 pointers, for a total of 14 points. Also, playing a good game for the Beavers was senior guard Danae Smith, who had 9 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. The Beavers shot 55.9% from the field, 46.2% from the 3 point line, and 50.0% from the charity stripe. The Beavers committed 32 turnovers, while dishing out 16 assists. The Beavers are now 2-12 on the season and 2-5 in the conference.
Leading the way for the Tigers, was Darby Massner, who had a game high 32 points, while sinking 10 three pointers. Also, scoring in double figures for the Tigers was Dakota Flesner who had 17 points, and Kaylee Moselesy who had 11 points. Two Tigers were tied for game high assists and those women where Rachel Williams, and Aimee Iverson, both women had 7 assists. The Tigers shot 45.6% from the field, 43.3% from 3 point line, and 78.6% from the charity stripe. The Tigers improve to 12-2 on the season and remain undefeated in the conference at 7-0.
The Beavers next game is on January 16th, at Eureka College with the tip off set for 1 pm.
