COLUMBUS, MS -- Blackburn College Softball visited Mississippi University for Women in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader but fell to the Owls, 3-2 and 7-2.
The Beavers got on the board first with two runs in the fifth inning of the opener. Sophomore Kenadee Frey was hit by a pitch and scored when freshman Mailee Schoen doubled to right center. Schoen scored thanks to a passed ball and a wild pitch.
With BC up 2-0, MUW answered with a run in the top of the sixth and then scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2.
The nightcap featured the hosts scoring three runs in their first inning and third inning before adding one in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. Blackburn managed to score two runs in the top of the sixth. After sophomore Sierra Hiser walked, junior Breana Allen singled and Frey walked to load the bases. Junior Zoe Mitchell followed with a single which scored Hiser. Schoen then singled to left field which scored Frey and made the score 7-2. Unfortunately the offense was unable to add any more runs.
For the day, Mitchell and Allen paced the team with three hits each. Schoen had two hits and two runs batted in while Mitchell had an RBI as well. Senior pitcher Shelby Koenig tallied five strikeouts and now has 114 on the year.
The softball team returns to their home field for a SLIAC doubleheader Tuesday against Eureka College and will celebrate their seniors Saturday against Greenville College.
